An exhibition by Gentry Amstutz
In 1982, Bruce Springsteen captured the raw, unvarnished edge of the American Dream on his album Nebraska, recorded on a simple four-track cassette recorder. The album gave voice to outlaws, dreamers, and working-class figures walking the line between survival and collapse. Nebraska: Debts No Honest Man Can Pay translates that haunting acoustic landscape into a visual body of work, with each painting inspired by a different song from the album.
Through painting, collage, photography, and mixed media, Gentry Amstutz reinterprets the world of Nebraska, using its stories and atmosphere as a foundation for his own visual language. Weathered imagery and expressive surfaces create a cinematic landscape where memory, isolation, and Americana intersect. The series explores the tension between hope and hardship, capturing the quiet grit, desperation, and dignity of people living on the edges of the American Dream.
